Orphan Black, a scifi thriller from BBC America and Space, stars Canadian actor Tatiana Maslany as several clones, products of a secret military experiment. All twenty episodes have featured at least one multiple-clone scene. After the first season, a slew of reviews reported that she must be 99 percent of the show. I decided to test that claim.

Five of the clones have appeared in multiple episodes. Lead character Sarah, who returns home to reunite with her daughter, is the only clone to appear in all twenty. She is on screen nearly every minute of the first three episodes, often impersonating police officer Beth Childs, who makes an all-too-brief appearance in episode one. Sarah meets Canadian soccer mom Alison, American grad student Cosima, and Ukranian assassin Helena early in the first season. Fellow Brit "proclone" Rachel makes her entrance in episode nine.

Sarah and Alison

Tatiana Maslany as both Sarah Manning and Alison Hendrix, thanks to the wonders
of special effects.

Rachel and Cosima

Rachel Duncan and Cosima Niehaus, not quite BFFs.

Any one of these characters would be a major role for an actor. Sarah is on screen the most, appearing in every episode and about half of the show's time overall. Helena has short but memorable scenes in fifteen episodes, while Rachel has been in eight of the twenty. Drawn separately, the women's screen time seem like that of an average lead and four supporting actresses.

But Orphan Black is no average show. Add all of her characters and there is a Tatiana Maslany (or two - or three, or four) in nearly every minute of the series.

So, just how much Tatiana Maslany is that? We could look at the empty spaces above, the few scenes in which she doesn't appear. But that wouldn't account for her many multi-clone scenes, in which several versions of herself appear at once. A better measure would be to look at her screen time, clone plus clone plus clone, in all twenty episodes.

[Character time by episode]

Note: All clones, including single-episode characters, are included in the first chart.

Episode three is 41.9 minutes long. Her characters appear in that episode for a total of 54.3 minutes. That's right, "Variations Under Nature" has 129.7 percent Tatiana Maslany. After two seasons, there are 831.5 minutes of Orphan Black and 827.6 minutes of Leda clones. Orphan Black is 99.5 percent Tatiana Maslany.

She's spent just over half of that time - seven hours total - as Sarah. Another 140 minutes went to Alison and 107 to Cosima. Those three women make up 81.2 percent of her time on the show.

Season three premieres on April 18. If patterns continue, we can expect lots of Sarah Manning, a smattering of the other main four, and a few clone swaps. And, as always, more Tatiana Maslanys.
